Home :: Regional

A region is a geographical region that has been designated by some authority as having common cultural or environmental characteristics. These regions are often named after a geographical region or may have a name created for tourism purposes. The names often evoke certain positive qualities of the regional area and suggest a coherent cultural component or experience to visitors of the region. Countries, states, provinces, and other administrative regions are often carved up into regions. People learn to identify with the region and it characteristics. This helps to make the region more permanent in the minds of the people that both live in the area and the view the area from outside the area.

Some examples of famous regions are based on historical or current administrative regions and include Tuscany in Italy and the Yucatán in Mexico and New England in the United States. Some examples of regions created by a government or tourism bureau include the United Kingdom's Lake District, California's Wine Country and the Upper Valley of the Connecticut River in New Hampshire and Vermont.
